"some loves"

The most profound farewells rarely arrive with grand gestures. Instead, they unfold in quiet, unassuming moments—like the steady rhythm of footsteps along the road to a station at dusk. Listening to the narrative of some loves, I am reminded of those evenings when the air grows heavy not with words, but with the mutual, unspoken knowledge of an ending.

"

There is a quiet, melancholic comfort in tracing a path together, even when you know the return journey will be made entirely alone.

It is an entirely natural instinct to avoid the reality of a parting by fixing our gaze on the smallest, most immediate things. Watching the streetlights shatter and scatter across a companion's hair becomes a quiet defense against sorrow. By deliberately slowing our stride to match the one beside us, we silently negotiate for just a few more minutes.

In these mundane acts of synchrony, we are not asking for forever. We are simply watching the light play in the dark, pretending the glow of the station is not drawing nearer.

The lyrics remind us that not all love is something we actively choose and build. Some connections are merely the brief, destined intersections of solitary planets. We are drawn from the vast dark into a radiant proximity, sharing each other's light for a fleeting while before drifting back into our respective, quiet orbits.

As the station lights finally loom, the song leaves us with a quiet image of surrender: slowly unfurling unconsciously clenched fingers, and letting go of the warmth gathered in a pocket.

The Footsteps Left Behind

When the train finally departs, taking the last of the shared warmth with it, the silence of the night settles differently. I turn away from the glowing platform and step back onto the exact same road we just measured together, only to find it subtly transformed by your absence.

The streetlights cast the same scattered glow, but there is no one beside me to catch their light. The empty pavement stretches endlessly forward. Yet, as I keep my hand tucked deep within my coat pocket, a faint heat remains pressed against my palm—a quiet, lingering proof that for a little while, at least, I did not walk through the dark alone.

Songs for the Return Journey

01

Ocie Elliott — "The Reckless"

Walking away does not always mean running; sometimes it is just a slow, deliberate march into the evening fog.

02

boygenius — "Cool About It"

A quiet conversation where so much is carefully left unsaid, allowing the heavy truth of an impending parting to simply hang in the cold air between us.

03

Hazlett — "Blame The Moon"

When the silence of an empty room becomes too loud, the celestial glow through the window offers a silent companionship.

04

Andy Shauf — "Wasted On You"

An introspective wander through dimly lit streets perfectly captures the feeling of pouring oneself out into an empty cup.
